Preserving History: Mighty Penguin and Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History Team Up to Save Park City's Remaining Mining Structures
When it comes to preserving the rich, but rapidly decaying history of Utah's mining industry, every structure counts. That's why the Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History, an all-volunteer group, are determined to keep the remaining 20 structures in Park City upright and continuing to inspire. With their sleeves rolled up and their hearts in the right place, the Friends work tirelessly to physically restore and maintain these precious markers of history. But they can't do it alone and that's where Mighty Penguin comes in. Our team is leading the charge to raise the capital needed to complete the remaining structures and establish an endowment that will secure funding for their upkeep in the future.
The Fascinating History of Mining in Park City, Utah
The history of mining in Park City, Utah, dates back to the 1860s, when silver was discovered in the area. This discovery led to a mining boom that lasted for several decades, and at its peak, there were more than 300 active mines in the area. The mining industry brought prosperity to Park City, and the town grew rapidly, becoming a hub for commerce and transportation. However, the decline of the mining industry in the mid-20th century led to a period of economic hardship for the town. In the 1970s, the opening of the Park City Mountain Resort sparked a new era of growth and development, but many of the historic mining structures were left in disrepair. Recognizing the importance of preserving this important part of the town's history, the Park City Museum formed a committee, The Friends of Ski Mountain Mining History, to raise funds and volunteer their time and expertise to restore and maintain the remaining mining structures.
